Physical Medicine And Rehabilitation

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department concentrates on diagnosing and treating a variety of disorders related to the brain, bones, muscles and nerves. Treatment is provided for patients who are unable to move physically as a result of illness or injury, and our specialized team of doctors help them regain part or whole of their movement capabilities, bringing them to normal life.

The department has expert rehabilitation physicians who work collaboratively with physical therapists, neurologists and orthopaedic surgeons, and based on the medical history of our patients, an appropriate treatment plan would be devised with the aim of bringing maximum recovery. Apart from the broad spectrum of disorders that we can identify, diagnose and treat, we have special technology in our PM&R department to help identify rare neurological disorders while our physiatrists, with their experience in electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction can suggest treatments and exercises. We have specialist doctors who deal with arthritis-related pain, acute and chronic pain syndromes and musculoskeletal injuries.




  • Orthopaedic rehabilitation : The Department specializes in protocol-based rehabilitation for the arthroplasty patients, spinal injury, ligament injury and post fracture care. Hand injuries and rehabilitation are indispensable associations and the department is adequately equipped to deal with this very important aspect of orthopaedic rehabilitation.
  • Neurology and Neurosurgery: Neuronal plasticity is the scientific basis on which the rehabilitation of Stroke and brain injury patients is founded.
  • Paediatric rehabilitation: The department is part of the child development clinic of MIMS, formed with the notion of early diagnosis and intervention. It offers neurodevelopment techniques and necessary orthotic intervention for the cerebral palsied children
  • Cumulative trauma disorders: Also called occupational overuse syndromes,they are injuries of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems that may be caused by repetitive tasks ,forceful exertions, vibrations,mechanical compression or sustained or awkward positions. Early diagnosis is essential for efficient management with a combination of drugs, exercises,ergonomics and physical agents
  • Pain management: This very important, but long neglected aspect of rehabilitation is a specialty of the department. Working in tandem with other clinical departments, the department has effective and well-proven methods in making a proper diagnosis in cases of backpain, heelpain, shoulderpain, neckpain ,kneepain etc and managing pain using exercises,drugs,various physical modalities,patient education, orthotic interventions, lifestyle changes and ergonomics ,all in combination as needed
  • Rheumatology: Pain relieving measures, splints and patient education regarding joint protection are the highlights.
  • Bladder dysfunction:Rehabilitation of bladder dysfuction is another unique feature that the department caters to in association with Urology Department. This service is especially valuable in case of spinal cord injury patients and meningomyelocele
  • Obesityraspberryhysiatrist along with endocrinologist and dietician is involved in obesity management in a very scientific manner with good results.Home programme exercises are prescribed after ruling out or managing the musculoskeletal complications of Obesity and also considering other risk factors. Joint protection is given utmost importance.
  • Prosthetic restoration Suitable Prosthesis or artificial limbs are prescribed according to age, level of activity desired,underlying diseases and complications to provide maximum restoration of function .Prosthesis is checkedout after fitting and training is given for its use.
  • Orthotic interventionsOrthosis or splints are devices which improve function,restricts or facilitate movements in joints,protects injured part , prevent contracture or provide support to a part of body . These have to be judiciously prescribed and checkedout after application to the body part and used as prescribed. Orthosis may be of help in many conditions like Spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, arthritis, deformities of skeletal system etc
  • ObstetricsPatients have the benefit of receiving advice regarding postnatal exercises backed by information leaflet.
  • Postburns contractureManagement of postburns contracture requires skill , patience and dedication .Post burns rehabilitation is another service offered by this department
  • VertigoIt is now being recognized that peripheral vertigo is best-managed using techniques of manipulation and exercises. This very distressing symptom is being managed along with the ENT department and has one of the largest series of patients treated by such methods. Long-term dependence on drugs by these unfortunate sufferers is largely reduced by these methods.
  • Cardiac rehabilitation & Chest physiotherapy They are also ancillary services offered by the Physical Medicine department in association with the respective departments. This is important as MIMS has one of the best Cardiac surgery departments in the country. The large ICU, again one of the largest ICU’s in the country, makes chest physiotherapy essential for many patients for early recovery.
